Poetry Workshops

Spoz likes to employ different ‘tools' in his poetry, performance poetry and ‘slam' poetry workshops.

Getting the ‘creative juices' flowing with word games, such as ‘Rhyming Wars' and ‘Word Buddies', always prove to be popular, as students begin to realise that poetry actually forms a significant part of their popular culture.

Building poems using tools like A to Z word bursts, imagery and ‘I've got rhyming couplets', gives students the confidence to create entertaining and often uncharacteristic pieces of work. This culminates in an exciting performance poetry, or ‘slam' poetry day, making literacy cool and something to be revered and not rejected!

‘Slam Poetry' days are a big favourite with year 6, 7, 8 and 9 students. Spoz facilitates these workshops in whole or half year groups (up to around 140 students) where, after some workshop activities, the students perform and compete against their piers with gusto and ‘attitude' in a performance poetry competition.

For smaller groups, Spoz also uses (if required) a Yamaha DJX2 keyboard to construct Rap and Hip Hop lyrics/poems with accompanying beats and loops.

Spoz's workshops support the national curriculum for English and literacy with regard to English speaking, listening, reading and writing. Click HERE to find out what Sion Hill Middle School in Kidderminster said about Spoz.
